Hollins University provides two forms of student employment through work-study programs to assist students financially: federal (need-based) and institutional. Work-study enables students to work part-time, usually on campus, and earn money for personal expenses. It is worth noting that work-study is not exactly studying; instead, students are paid for the work they do. Wages are considered taxable income. Earnings are paid monthly in the form of a paycheck through direct deposit, not deducted from your bill.
Students who were not offered a work study position, can seek other potential on campus employment opportunities. Please see the list below:

- The HUB – For more information, please contact Dining Services
- QR Center/Tutor position – Please note that a prerequisite course is required for this opportunity.

Work-Study Programs are committed to providing students with an opportunity for employment. The main objective of the employment programs is financial support, but on-the-job training experience is also important. Students will be expected to perform the work that is agreed upon when accepting the student employment positions. Students may not earn more than the amount in their award letter and can work a maximum of 20 hours per week while classes are in session. However, based upon most work study awards, students will work approximately 6.5 hours a week. If you are available to work during the J-term, you are permitted to do so, however the earnings will reduce the number of hours that you can work in the spring term.
If you are offered work study as part of your financial aid package, it will be listed as a “student employment position” on your award notification. The following actions must be met before a student can begin working:
- Accept/Decline your Student Employment Position via your paper financial aid notification letter or your Hollins Information System (HIS) portal.
- Complete the necessary Human Resources form. Note that some of the forms are also fillable via these sites and must be saved for uploading OR printed for faxing:
Once completing the forms, you may upload them, the appropriate ID(s) for the Form I-9, and a voided check or bank document to this secure site OR bring them in person to check-in day OR fax the items to Human Resources at 540-362-6571.
- Complete the necessary Business Office Form.
- Direct deposit form (accessible through my.hollins.edu – you will need to log in with your Hollins University computer account information)
Please note that the direct deposit form and voided check/bank document may be uploaded to the Business Office secure site as linked on the direct deposit form.
- Sign the Student Employment Agreement with designated work-study supervisor and submit back to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance.
Students cannot start working until all requirements have been completed. During the beginning of the academic year, students will need to meet with their work-study supervisor to establish a weekly work schedule.
